Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person

by Shonda Rhimes

For Shonda Rhimes, executive producer and showrunner for hit programs like Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, and How to Get Away with Murder, success came with the side-effect of unexpected invitations to speak in front of an audience or attend Hollywood gatherings—a dream for many, but a source of anxiety for the introverted Rhimes. Her reticence prompted her sister to complain that that Rhimes never said "yes" to anything.

Stung by her sister's words, Rhimes took a closer look at the amazing opportunities she was turning down—and realized it was a lot. She also realized that while always saying "no" was keeping her safe, it was also making her terribly unhappy.

Rhimes set herself a challenge: for one year, she would say "yes" to everything that scared her. Year of Yes details how this exercise helped Rhimes change her inner landscape from anxiety to self-acceptance, rediscover what was most important to her, and even come to a better understanding of when to say "yes" to saying "no."

What opportunities will you say "yes" to this year?
